This session is organized within the Project ‘Contemporary Arab Dramaturgy’ organized by La Friche Belle de Mai (Marseille, France), in partnership with Shams (Beirut, Lebanon), Al Harah (Beit Jala, Palestine), El Teatro (Tunis, Tunisie) and the International College of Literary Translators (CITL, Arles, France), and supported by the European Union.

It will be facilitated by Marie Elias and Nehad Selaiha :

Marie Elias: Author, translator and professor of literature and theater; writing workshop facilitator in Syria. Marie Elias is professor at Damascus University, Faculty of Arts, Department of French Language and Literature and at the Saint Joseph, University Beirut, Lebanon. She was a lecturer at the Institute of Dramatic Art in Damascus, Theater Studies Section until 2007. Marie Elias facilitates and directs interactive theater projects based on stories inspired from the oral tradition.

Nehad Selaiha: Professor of Drama and Criticism at the Arts Criticism Postgraduate Studies Institute at The Academy of Arts (Cairo). She is a leading theatre critic/writer/translator in Cairo and the author of many books on theatre and criticism in both Arabic and English. Her book « Theatre from Text to Performance » was awarded ‘best book of the year in theatre criticism’ by The Cairo International Book Fair in 1999. Other Arabic books include:  Shakespearean Perspectives; Contemporary Trends in World Theatre; Theatre and Freedom; Spotlights on the English Theatre and Thought and Art in Theatre. Since 1989, Nehad Selaiha has been the resident drama critic of the national English-language newspaper Al-Ahram Weekly.
