“Luzzu”: Alex Camilleri’s Cinema of the Real
The film denounces the dramatic situation of Maltese fishermen by telling a story about the dignity of those who fight for survival against major economic interests. After having garnered significant international awards, such as the Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival in Toronto and at the Independent Film Festival in Boston, the film has just been screened at the Festival of Mediterranean Citizens in Catania.

Tough times for cinema in Algeria!
In the aftermath of independence in 1962, Algeria hosted 450 cinemas. Sixty years later, there are less than two dozen left. Minister of Culture Azzedine Mihoubi’s declaration last June that “95% of Algerian cinemas are closed and non-operating” came as a bolt out of the blue.

48 Hour Film Project in Tunis
The 48 Hour Film Project is the world oldest and largest timed filmmaking competition, initiated in 2001 by Mark Ruppert and Liz Langston in the Usa and soon gone global. In 2015 a total of 130 cities will host the challenge. More then 30,000 short films have been produced so far.

Word of Gitano, the short film of a community
Realized with crowdfunding in the Andalusian city of Almeria and already won awards at many festivals, "Antonia" tells the story of a young photographer and her encounter with a journalist, both Gitanes. Youssef Alimam: “Denial flows in our veins like the water of the Nile in the middle of Egypt”
Youssef Alimam is a 22–year-old musician, composer, independent filmmaker, actor, scriptwriter and photographer. He graduated from the High Cinema Institute in Cairo and also has a background in sound engineering and production. Oh Filmmaking, Save Us!
The Universal Forum of Cultures, organized by UNESCO took place between 20-25 October in Naples, in spite of all the organizational setbacks. Organized by Cinema e Diritti association, the festival brought together 30 guests from about 20 countries and hosted films about the most forgotten among the poor and the bravest activists who defy cowardice and violence.

“Turkey, of which I am a part of, is ready for this film”
“The Cut”, Turkish-German director Fatih Ak?n’s movie about the Armenian genocide will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, held from 27 August to 6 September. Ak?n, in an interview to “Agos” (Armenian newspaper published in Turkey), stated that his greatest wish was for the film to be screened in major theatres in Turkey.
