The story of Daniel, an immigrant from the Ivory Coast in Algeria His father wanted to enrol him in the militias friendly to President Gbagbo and he was afraid of being killed. He also wanted to become a man, but not on the battlefield. He thought only of leaving. Wasn’t his brother a success story for the family? Wasn’t he settled, for years, in Italy? So, he migrated North, with Algeria as his destination. He didn’t know much from this far-away land. He knew it was an Arab state, where people spoke French. He knew, especially, that from there, Europe would be much closer than it was from the Ivory Coast. (Yassin Temlali) |

Sub-Saharan immigration and Human Rights in Algeria The activity of Human Rights NGOs thwarted by the lack of means Even though it is constantly increasing, “illegal” Sub-Saharan immigration does not yet seem to be the main concern of the two Algerian Human Rights leagues, the LADH and the LADDH (1). Neither of these two NGOs has, at the moment, launched a campaign to raise consciousness about the situation of irregular Sub-Saharan immigrants, the vast majority of which live in extremely precarious conditions. Mohamed Saïb Musette, international migrations specialist “Sub-Saharan migration to the North, particularly from Mali and Nigeria, is an millenary phenomenon (…) Malians, Nigerians and southern Algerian, Tuaregs, have always moved freely in the great Sahara” says international migrations specialist, Mohamed Saïb Musette. Today, however, migratory movements have increased and Algeria hosts more than 20000 Sub-Saharan immigrants. How can one explain this trend? What migration strategy have these newcomers adopted?
