Richard III – an Arab tragedy
2008-05-22
Kuwaiti director Sulayman Al-Bassam's adaptation of the Shakespearian tragedy "Richard III" transposes the action from mediaeval England to Saddam Hussein's Iraq of the mid-1980s.
Starring Favez Kazak in the role of the evil Emir Gloucester/Hussein, this production uses video and live traditional music to evoke a tyrannical surveillance society tied to the customs of the past. Now hosted by the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord.
"Richard III – an Arab tragedy" was originally created for the Royal Shakespeare Company's "Complete Works Festival" (2006-7). Performed in Arabic with French surtitles.
Admission €10-€24. Performances Tues-Sat at 20.30. Sat matinee at 15.30. Sun at 17.00.
