Titles of Conference often sound a bit vain, and the words rarely reach the objectives of dialogue and true exchange. The meeting on Friday the 5th of May at the Capitole of Rome was not disappointing... Strong themes, personal intervention, points of view and analysis that completed or competed each other confirmed the need of exchange from both sides of the Mediterranean.

There are several reasons why we thought it would be interesting this year to open our annual meeting of the Babelmed journalists network to the public. Indeed, the cartoon crises has highlighted the petty symbolic and media war which is dividing the Mediterranean…

4 years of a Mediterranean Journalistic Network
Babelmed was launched in 2001, a year in which neoconservative theories on civilisation spread worldwide. A year in which the words such as Islam and the West started to be used as indisputable explanations for the state of today’s world. On 16th September 2001, Edward Said was already writing what sounds like a call to reason in his article: “Islam and the West are not the right flags”. This title perfectly sums up Babelmed’s editorial approach since its creation: to fly no flags.

The New Legitimacy of the Muslim brotherhoods in Egypt
The last year and a half has been very exciting politically in the region. Several elections took place and in most of these elections the Islamist parties did very good: in Egypt, first, with the Muslim brotherhoods, in Palestine where Hamas won the elections, in Iraq, where a Shia-US-backed coalition is in power. In Syria, the government under pressure is reaching out to their own Muslim brotherhood, in Morocco, for the next parliamentary elections the PGD, a moderate Islamic party, is amongst the favourites. Islamists parties are on the rise in all the region.

A Brief Geo-Poetical Consideration: Where do East and West begin?
Being a lover of the West and coming from the East isn’t always easy, nor is it painless to feel for the East when you come from the West. In the first case, you’re seen as being in the pay of foreign powers, in the latter, you’re deemed a victim of the distorting prism of exoticism.

Islam and the West in the Mediterranean: beyond entertainment
The recurring and often manipulated culture clash themes and on Islam vs. West conflicts that thrust political conflicts in religion, are being quite frankly abandoned by Middle Eastern producers. The latter, as an alterative to commitment and politics, favour a return to an art cinema free to choose its own topics - be they of desertion or comedy - which at present are still restricted to a few Israeli and Egyptian productions for the general public.

Grandeur and digressions of Turkish cinema
We can now legitimately dare to hope beyond hope. Talk about the renaissance over the past few years has not been in vain. The revival of Turkish cinema is being consolidated and laying down roots. Even the most evil weeds thrive in this fertile soil. Everyman’s ambition has a place here: from the sincere to the perverse. The best and worse of Turkish films rub shoulders on the same screens. Surely this is a sign of vigour, if not of good health.
